As many as 400 snow leopards are believed to exist across the two northern most provinces of the Pakistan where the Hindu Kush and Karakorum ranges merge.

In 2009 the Snow Leopard Trust was able to double the size of the "snow leopard friendly" vaccination program. Having surveyed over a dozen communities in the northern district of Chitral five sites were prioritised for expansion. All the new villlages signed Conservation contracts with the Trust to refrain from poaching and in return over 9000 animals from 700 households received inoculations.

What was of particular significance was the new area joining the progam forms a connective corridor to other snow leopard ranges which allows a genetic flow between these distinct portions of snow leopard range.
