China is believed to be home to as many as half of the world's
snow leopard population in the wild.
In 2009 the Snow Leopard Trust entered in to a collaboration
with a new NGO call Shan Shui, which is undertaking activities such
as mapping snow leopard range, and establishing community-based
conservation projects at key sites.
In the Tibetan Plateau a novel approach to snow leopard
conservation is under way. Conservation projects are being focused
around monasteries. Monks are encournaging the local residents to
conserve snow leopards and their prey and are taking a lead in
monitoring the results by placing camera traps in the field to see
if cat numbers increase under their care.
